Greyfriars Bobby: Edinburgh’s Most Beloved Ghost Story

If you’re exploring things to do in Edinburgh and want a mix of history, heart, and a touch of the supernatural, there’s no better tale than that of Greyfriars Bobby — the city’s most loyal dog, and perhaps its most famous ghost.
Who Was Greyfriars Bobby?
Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who lived in the 19th century and famously kept watch over his master's grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard for 14 years. His master, John Gray — a nightwatchman with the Edinburgh City Police — died in 1858 and was buried in the historic graveyard.
Despite being offered new homes and shelter, Bobby returned daily to his master’s resting place, enduring rain, snow, and the passage of time. His unwavering loyalty captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike, and he was eventually buried near the same graveyard — just inside the gate.
Why Visit Greyfriars Bobby?
Greyfriars Kirkyard is one of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric and historic cemeteries, filled with centuries-old tombstones, ghostly legends, and dark tales of graverobbing, executions, and hauntings. Visiting Bobby’s statue and grave is more than a photo opportunity — it’s a moment of connection to a story of devotion that has echoed through time. On top of Bobby's grave you can often see a large pile of sticks left by tourists for Bobby. Be sure to leave one yourself!
The kirkyard is open 24 hours a day to the public and is a MUST SEE if you are visiting Edinburgh and a fan of dark history or ghost stories.
